Tuition at technical colleges in the state will increase starting with the winter 2008 semester that begins in January.

During the Department of Technical and Adult Education state board meeting held at Coosa Valley Technical College in Rome, a $5 increase per credit hour was approved, making tuition $36 per credit hour.

The new increase, the first in two years, will raise the annual tuition from $1,488 to $1,728, a $240 increase, according to DTAE officials. That rate remains one of the lowest tuitions in the Southeast, officials said.

Carl Swearingen, chairman of the state board, said there’s reward in the long term.

“We’re keeping our tuition affordable and our education valuable,” said Swearingen, “especially given that our technical college graduates are in high demand and many enter the workforce making $40,000 a year or more.”
