The Senate is expected to vote Monday on legislation from Republican state Rep. Doug McKillip that would cut down on the time women can legally seek an abortion in Georgia. His bill would make exceptions for when a pregnancy threatens a mother's life or health.
Women can now get abortions in Georgia until the third trimester of pregnancy. At that point, abortions are illegal except to protect the life or physical and mental health of the mother. McKillip's legislation would eliminate the mental health exception.
His bill earlier passed in the House. If the Senate approves it, the legislation goes to the desk of Republican Gov. Nathan Deal.
