Rockmart police are continuing an investigation into the Dec. 2 burglary of a local pharmacy, according to Rockmart Police Chief Keith Sorrells.
“We’re certainly working on it, but we don’t have any suspects at this time,” he said.
Burglars broke into the Smith-Lockwood Pharmacy at 701 Hogue Ave., Rockmart, around 12:46 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 2, by throwing a cinderblock through the shop window.
Sorrells said the perpetrators took three types of medications. Nothing else was stolen, he said.
While he isn’t currently revealing the types of drugs taken, Sorrells said that it was an odd selection because some wouldn’t have any street value.
“”They apparently didn’t know what they were getting,” Sorrells said.
Charges may change in gun incident
The Rockmart Police Department is consulting with the Polk County District Attorney’s office regarding a criminal charge filed in November against a man who brought a gun into a restaurant.
Police Chief Keith Sorrells said the charge against Phillip Lee Woods, 41, of Rockmart, could change. Woods is currently charged with carrying a concealed weapon at a public gathering.
He was charged after a Nov. 24 incident at Johnny’s Pizza in Rockmart, according to reports.
Reports state that Woods was involved in a verbal altercation at the restaurant. He then went to his car and retrieved his gun, which he is permitted to carry as a concealed weapon, according to reports.
The restaurant manager called police, Sorrells said.
Sorrells said that Woods’ Georgia Weapons Carry License stipulated he couldn’t carry his gun into a public gathering.
Sorrells said the problem is his license was an older one. The law was later changed to redefine public gathering to include only restaurants serving alcohol, he said.
That would include the Rockmart restaurant, he said.
However, Sorrells said more changes in state law grandfathered Woods, and all others permitted to carry concealed weapons, into the new law doing away with public gathering stipulations completely.
Sorrells said Woods should still face some type of charge because he made an effort to go get his gun from the car in the heat of a dispute.
“I understand we follow laws. I understand the legislature makes the laws,” Sorrells said. “At the same time, we have an obligation to public safety.
“This could have broken down very easily in this situation.”
Police investigate alleged rape
Rockmart police are not finding any evidence that an alleged rape on Thanksgiving Day ever happened, according to an official.
The incident was reported Nov. 23, the following day after the alleged incident tood place, according to Rockmart Police Chief Keith Sorrells.
The adult female who reported the incident said a stranger raped her in a public place in Rockmart, Sorrells said.
The woman was taken to the Sexual Assault Center and police took her statement. They are continuing to investigate, Sorrells said.
