A Cedartown football team is only one win away from playing in the state tournament.

According to Michael Atwater, the president of the Panthers youth travel football league, the Panthers have teamed up with the Cedartown Recreation Department and the 11-and-12-year-old All-Star football team is one victory away from playing at state.

"We are competing in the Georgia Parks and Recreation Association (GRPA) and we are in District 5 and we have advanced through pool play into the final four," Atwater said. "We are scheduled to play Thursday and Saturday and if we win on one of those days we advance to state."

Atwater said the 12-and-under Cedartown squad went 2-1 during pool play. They defeated Gordon County 39-0 and Whitfield County 26-12, however, they lost to Dalton 30-26.

"In our District there are seven teams," Atwater said. "There is Cedartown, Dalton, Whitfield County, Gordon County, Murray County, Bartow County and Calhoun. Out of those seven teams, we are down to the final four."

Atwater said the site for the final four and the starting times were not set as of Monday afternoon.

If Cedartown claims one win in the District final four they will advance to the state tournament that will be held Dec. 11-13 at Cartersville.

Atwater also stated that the 7-and-8-year-old Cedartown All-Stars and the 9-and-10-year-old All-Stars both went winless in pool play and were eliminated from the postseason.

Coaching the 12-and-under All-Star team is Atwater, Andre Clark, Jeff Atkins and Daryl Pittman.

"Some of the players who have played well are Kaelin Glover, Freddy Moore, Darian Hargrove, Tyler Blaylock, Riley Atkins, Steven Blazer, Drew Vance and T.J. Ector," Atwater stated.
